Triple P (Positive Parenting Program)- Shiv Khera

Triple P - Positive Parenting Program is a comprehensive parent-training programme designed to reduce child maltreatment and behavioural problems in children. It was designed to treat large populations because it is based on a public health approach. Parents are taught the following five core principles:

  • Maintain a safe and enjoyable environment.

  • Make a positive learning environment a priority.

  • Make use of assertive discipline.

  • Maintain realistic expectations.

  • As a parent, take care of yourself.

These core principles teach parents how to engage in positive and supportive parenting. The first step is to overcome the stigma that some parents require assistance and training in order to be effective parents. The second step is to provide them with the necessary tools and knowledge to raise healthy children.

Target Population/Program Activities

The Triple P system includes five intervention levels that increase in intensity while decreasing population reach. Any family with at least one child aged infant to 12 years old is eligible for any of the five programming levels; parents decide how much assistance they require.

At each level of the intervention, there are different programme activities:

Level 1: Universal Triple P

This intervention employs a media campaign to reach out to parents in need of assistance. The goal is to de-stigmatize parent education and make effective parenting strategies accessible to all families who want to use them. The media campaign includes radio and newspaper advertisements, school newsletters, and mass mailings to families in the intervention area. These messages contain some parenting tips and guidelines, but their primary purpose is to spread the word about positive parenting program as well as upcoming parent training seminars.

Level 2: Selected Triple P

Level 2 intervention expands on the first level but narrows the focus of the programming. The goal here is to normalise parenting interventions and to show parents that asking for help is acceptable. The programme is primarily aimed at parents dealing with minor behavioural issues or smaller issues that do not necessitate intensive intervention. This intervention is available in two formats: brief consultations with individual parents as well as parenting seminars delivered to large groups of parents.

The brief consultations consist of one or two 20-minute meetings, while the other delivery format includes three 90-minute sessions aimed at large populations of parents. The seminars are self-contained, so parents can attend one of the three or the entire series and still benefit. As with the brief consultations, each delivery method provides another opportunity for parents to become familiar with Triple P and, if necessary, inquire about more intensive levels of assistance and parent training.

Level 3: Primary Care Triple P

The intensity of intervention is increased in Primary Care Triple P. This level is appropriate for families dealing with common behavioural issues. Active skill training and effective parenting strategies are combined with advice and information. This level of assistance and training will be most beneficial to families with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. The delivery format consists of four 20-minute consultations that include active skills training and parenting tip sheets covering common developmental issues (such as potty training) and behavioural issues.

Level 4: Standard and Group Triple P

This level of intervention is aimed at populations of children who have detectable problems but are not clinically diagnosed, as well as parents who are struggling with child-rearing issues. Parents are taught a variety of child management skills as well as advice on how to apply these skills at home and in their communities. At this level of intervention, there are two delivery formats. The first consists of ten 90-minute sessions with individual families. These sessions include skill training as well as home observation.

The second format is for large groups and consists of eight sessions. Five of these are two-hour sessions designed to teach parents through observation, discussion, practise, and feedback. There are three 15- to 30-minute telephone follow-up sessions that provide additional support to parents as they put their new knowledge into practice at home.

Level 5: Enhanced Triple P

This is an optional version of level 4 for parents who require more serious intervention or are dealing with major behavioural issues. This level of training includes additional modules on partner communication, mood management, stress management, and dealing with parent-child issues.
